Archangel

The idea for this typeface design came from a track of the same name, by the electronic music artist, Burial. His music is a dark, ambient evolution of the UK Garage genre that sounds urban and modern, but at the same time mysterious and romantic. So I settled on a modern interpretation of blackletter, heavily vertical to reflect cityscapes, and with diagonal hairline elements evoking digital gitching. Initially an exercise in lettering, it evolved into an idea for a whole typeface which took after the ‘Textura’ tradition of Mediaeval Christian manuscripts.

I collaborated with James Usill who produced the glitch art presented with the typeface here. The font is available for download at Creative Market.
