Archangel
The idea for this typeface design came from a track of the same name, by the electronic music artist, Burial. His music is a dark, ambient evolution of the UK Garage genre that sounds urban and modern, but at the same time mysterious and romantic. So I settled on a modern interpretation of blackletter, heavily vertical to reflect cityscapes, and with diagonal hairline elements evoking digital gitching. Initially an exercise in lettering, it evolved into an idea for a whole typeface which took after the ‘Textura’ tradition of Mediaeval Christian manuscripts.I collaborated with James Usill who produced the glitch art presented with the typeface here. The font is available for download at Creative Market.
